Both Traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs have tax advantages:
- Traditional IRAs typically have pre-tax contributions that grow tax-deferred until disbursement.
- Roth IRAs typically have post-tax contributions that grow completely tax-free.
Swan IRA is a great way to capture Bitcoin’s long-term potential in a tax-advantaged way without the tracking error that many proxies have. On top of that, unlike when you trade Bitcoin outside a tax-advantaged account, doing so within an IRA allows you to avoid the often-tedious process of reporting trades on your taxes each year.
Swan IRA holds Bitcoin in a custodial legal trust account, in your name as the beneficial owner. Swan works with two qualified custodians, Fortress Trust and BitGo Trust Company.
Swan has supported many clients through this process. There are a few important considerations when thinking about IRAs and self-custody, such as the McNulty tax case from 2021.
